What booking software actually costs your shop.

Fresha, Booksy, Square, Vagaro, Jane and the rest, priced for a Canadian salon, barbershop, spa or clinic. The monthly fee is the easy part. The one that adds up is the commission some apps take on every new client they send you.

Your numbers

What each one costs your shop

Put in how many people take bookings and how many new clients the app sends you a month. Card processing isn't included, because every option charges roughly the same for it.

Only clients who found you through the app's own search. Regulars rebooking and clients from your own link don't count.
Per month, then per year
What this does not claim. The marketplace fee buys something real: clients who had never heard of you. Your own booking site only brings in new clients if people can find it. If most of your new clients come from Fresha or Booksy searches, those fees may be worth paying. They're harder to justify on a client who would have found you anyway.
The fee most owners miss

A commission on your new clients

Fresha, Booksy and Mindbody each run a marketplace: an app where the public searches for a haircut or a massage. When a new client finds you there, the app takes a cut of that first visit. Fresha takes 20% (at least $6), Booksy's US terms say 30% (between $10 and $100), and Mindbody takes 20% of the first purchase, capped at $30.

After the first visit, that client is usually free to rebook. The fee applies again with every new client the marketplace sends, so it grows with your business.

One new client, $60 first visit

  • Through Fresha's marketplace: fee $12.00
  • Through Booksy Boost (US terms): fee $18.00
  • Through your own link or site: $0

Which one fits you

One chair, tight budget

Square Appointments' free plan is hard to beat: $0 a month, unlimited staff at one location, and no marketplace fee. You'll need Plus for cancellation fees.

You want the app to find you clients

Fresha or Booksy. You're paying for the marketplace, so use it. Send your regulars your own booking link so they don't count as new.

A health clinic

Jane is a Canadian company built for clinics, with booking and card-on-file from $54 a month. A general salon app is the wrong tool for a physio or chiro practice.

Your own site, your own clients

Booking on your own website, no marketplace putting the shop down the road in front of your regulars, and a flat price rather than a fee per staff member. That's my Booking Block, for salons, barbers and clinics.
