Websites for independent shops · Milton & the GTA West

Nobody drives across town to find out.

Your competition is not the shop down the road. It is a customer deciding not to leave the house. They will happily drive ten minutes for something they know is there — they will not drive ten minutes to check. When they cannot tell, the thing that arrives tomorrow wins by default.

Use the calls you already get.

You cannot count the people who never contacted you. But you can count the ones who did — and they are the visible edge of the same group. Start there.

A normal basket, not the once-a-month big one.

Calls, messages, DMs. You answer these, so you can count them.

Your estimate. Asking takes effort; most people would rather not phone a stranger.

Plenty were browsing. This is the share who genuinely wanted the thing.

A site does not win all of those back. What it does is remove the reason they stopped: they could not tell whether the trip was worth making.

The question is always the same one.

Have you got it, and are you open. Every independent shop answers that same question dozens of times a week, on the phone, one person at a time — and every one of those calls is from someone who was motivated enough to ring. The rest just looked, found nothing that answered them, and let the internet handle it.

This is not about competing with Amazon on price or delivery. You will lose that. It is about the much smaller group who would genuinely rather buy it from you today, if only they could be sure of a wasted trip.

A site that answers before they ask.

Three jobs, in the order they decide whether someone gets in the car.

01 — Show what you carry

Brands and ranges, not a live inventory count

What lines you stock, what you specialise in, what you can order in. Deliberately not a real-time stock number for every item — that is a system you would have to feed daily and it is wrong the moment it slips. "We carry it" answers the question; "3 left" creates a promise.

02 — Be open

Hours that are right on a holiday Monday

Correct hours, wired to the same place your Google listing reads from, so they never disagree. Half of local searching is someone checking whether it is worth setting off right now, and a stale hours page sends them somewhere else.

03 — Be findable at all

Pages for the things people actually search

Real pages for the categories you sell, marked up so search engines know what you carry and where you are. Most shop sites are one page with a photo of the storefront, which is invisible to someone searching for a product.

You probably do not need a webshop

This is the part most people expect me to upsell, so: for a shop in a town like Milton, online selling is usually the wrong thing to buy first. It brings packing, shipping, returns, payment disputes and stock that has to be right — a second business bolted onto the one you already run.

Getting people through the door is cheaper, faster and does not add a job to your week. If you genuinely want to ship things, The Order Kitchen is $6,900 and does it properly. I would rather you started with the door.

What it costs.

$4,800 flat · The Signature Site

Custom, start to finish, built by the person you will be emailing. Live in about two weeks. Half to start, the balance when it goes live, no other charges.

Optional care plan at $180/month if you would rather I keep it hosted, backed up, monitored and edited — including hours and new ranges as they change. Cancellable any month after the first six. Your domain and your content stay in your name either way.

When this is not worth it.

  • You are in a mall or on a high street with footfall you do not control and do not need. Your customers are already walking past.
  • Your stock is one-of-a-kind and turns over weekly. Anything you publish is wrong by Friday, and a wrong answer is worse than none.
  • You already sell everything through Instagram and it genuinely works. Do not let anyone talk you out of something that is working.
  • You are a wholesaler rather than a shop. Your buyers are trade, they already know you, and they are not searching.

Send me your numbers.

Tell me what you sell, where you are, and roughly how often people phone to ask if you have something. I will tell you honestly whether a site changes it — including when it will not. No call, no pitch, no follow-up sequence.

What it costs, what it includes, how long it takes. Reply within one business day.
